A seven day São Miguel itinerary by car

Spend seven full days on São Miguel in geographic sections: Ponta Delgada, Sete Cidades and the west coast, Ribeira Grande and the north coast, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas, Nordeste, then a spare day for the south coast or a second attempt at a cloud covered lake. Choose the high viewpoint days according to visibility. This guide sets out each route, what deserves your time and what to leave out if plans change.

São Miguel looks easy to circle on a map. On the ground, a proper walk takes a morning, a thermal bath is not a twenty minute stop and cloud can close in on the next viewpoint. This itinerary assumes seven full days, a base in Ponta Delgada and a car. If flights take up most of your first and last days, use the shorter version below rather than squeezing seven full days into five.

The week at a glance

Day Area Suggested route Allow
1 Ponta Delgada Historic centre → waterfront → dinner in town Half a day or more, depending on arrival
2 West Vista do Rei → another crater viewpoint → Sete Cidades village → Mosteiros Full day
3 North Ribeira Grande → north coast → tea plantation or thermal visit Full day, with a few chosen stops
4 Centre Lagoa do Fogo → Água de Pau → Caloura or Lagoa Full day; access and visibility matter
5 Furnas Pico do Ferro → Furnas Lake → village → garden or thermal bathing Full day
6 East Ribeira dos Caldeirões → Nordeste village → eastern viewpoints Full day; Povoação village is optional
7 South or repeat Vila Franca do Campo or a return to a missed lake Flexible around your flight

Treat the table as a geographic plan, not seven fixed appointments. Check the Visit Azores webcams and forecast the evening before and again before leaving. If Sete Cidades is under cloud, swap days two and three. If Lagoa do Fogo clears on your planned Furnas day, consider changing the order. Day seven gives you a second chance.

Before you set off

Check where and when you collect and return your car, opening times for paid sites and the current status of any walking trails. Road access at Lagoa do Fogo can be subject to seasonal arrangements and a shuttle service; check the official information for your dates. In Furnas, decide whether your priority is a garden, thermal bathing or a long walk. Pack shoes with grip and a waterproof layer even if the coast starts the day in sunshine.

Day 1 — Get your bearings in Ponta Delgada

Route: accommodation → Portas da Cidade and Gonçalo Velho Cabral Square → historic streets → waterfront. Add a garden or museum only if you have time and have checked its opening hours.

Flights, car collection, luggage and parking take longer than a neat itinerary suggests. Settle in, then explore on foot. The Portas da Cidade make an easy starting point. Wander through the centre, go into a church or cultural space that interests you and finish by the sea. If you arrive early, Mercado da Graça and one of the city gardens can fill the afternoon without a long drive.

Use the evening to make the rest of the week easier. Work out where parking is permitted near your accommodation, buy anything you need for the first excursions and save a map for offline use. Check the weather by area, not just the forecast symbol for Ponta Delgada. If you only have two hours, a short central walk is enough; you can return to the city on day seven.

Day 2 — Sete Cidades: crater views, the village and the western sea

Route: Ponta Delgada → Vista do Rei → one other crater viewpoint if conditions suit → Sete Cidades village → Mosteiros. Ponta da Ferraria is an optional detour.

Morning: understand the crater from above

Go when visibility is good. At Vista do Rei, take time to identify the Blue and Green Lakes, the bridge and the village inside the crater. If cloud begins to descend, head down rather than chasing more viewpoints. If the sky stays clear and you want to walk, consider an official trail along the rim instead of driving from car park to car park. The PR03 SMI Vista do Rei–Sete Cidades trail is linear, about 7.5 km, and finishes in the village. Plan how you will get back to your car before starting, and check the trail status.

Lagoa do Canário and the Grota do Inferno viewpoint area offer other perspectives. They are choices, not mandatory boxes to tick: queues, mud and low cloud can change what makes sense. One additional viewpoint followed by time at lake level usually makes a better day than several hurried photos.

Afternoon: spend time in Sete Cidades village

Drive down to Sete Cidades village, in the western crater. This is a different place from Povoação village, which lies in the southeast and belongs to another day’s route. Walk along accessible lakeside paths, pass the Church of São Nicolau and stop for lunch or coffee. Seen from below, the landscape has houses, fields and everyday life as well as water and crater walls. Stay on marked paths and respect private property.

If you still have daylight and energy, head west to Mosteiros for its coastline and islets. Consider Ponta da Ferraria only if access and sea conditions are safe. Do not enter the water when the sea is unsafe. If you took the morning hike, Mosteiros may be a better choice for another day. Thick cloud over the crater? Swap this entire itinerary with the north coast and come back when visibility improves.

Day 3 — Ribeira Grande and the north coast

Route: Ponta Delgada → Ribeira Grande → one or two north coast stops → Porto Formoso or Gorreana tea area → return.

Begin in Ribeira Grande. Walk through the centre and see the seafront before deciding how much farther to go. The exposed Atlantic coast feels quite different from the crater lakes. If you plan to swim, check local warnings and conditions; the view from the road is not a safety assessment.

Continue east and choose one tea visit rather than treating both Porto Formoso and Gorreana as quick checklist stops. Check the operator’s opening times and tour arrangements directly. Leave time to notice the agricultural landscape around the buildings. If thermal bathing appeals more, substitute Caldeira Velha for the tea visit and check its tickets, time slots and site rules. That choice also keeps the Lagoa do Fogo day lighter.

Families or anyone who wants less time in the car can finish here. If you have energy, add one beach or coastal viewpoint on the return, chosen according to the weather. Two or three worthwhile experiences are enough. On a rainy day, keep Ribeira Grande and one confirmed indoor visit; conditions may differ elsewhere on the island.

Day 4 — Lagoa do Fogo and the south coast

Route: Lagoa do Fogo using the access arrangement in force → open viewpoints → Água de Pau → Caloura or Lagoa.

Give Lagoa do Fogo the clearest window you can. Check the webcam, forecast and official destination information. A shuttle service exists and access rules may change by season. An old travel article is not enough to tell you where to drive or park on your travel dates. If a shuttle is required, plan around it. Follow viewpoint signs and do not cross barriers or fragile ground to find a quieter angle.

Decide in advance whether you are there for the viewpoint or for a hike. Seeing the lake from the designated viewpoints is a complete visit. A walk towards the water, when permitted and appropriate, changes the whole day’s timing. Check the current trail information and take a warm layer: the high ground can feel very different from the coast.

Afterwards, return south. Água de Pau, Caloura and Lagoa offer choices for lunch or an unhurried afternoon; pick one main stop. If cloud completely hides the lake, come down earlier and reserve a second attempt for day seven. Waiting indefinitely in a car park rarely improves a holiday. Avoid trying to combine Lagoa do Fogo, Sete Cidades and Furnas in one day when you have a week to distribute them.

Day 5 — Furnas: lake, geothermal ground, gardens and thermal water

Route: Pico do Ferro viewpoint → Furnas Lake → geothermal area → Furnas village → Terra Nostra Park or Poça da Dona Beija. Rearrange around bookings and opening hours.

Pico do Ferro helps you see how the lake and village sit within the valley. Go down to the lake for either a short stop or a substantial walk. The official Furnas Lake trail is roughly 9.4 km and three hours. If you do it, cut other visits. Confirm current trail status, tickets and access before departure.

In the village, leave time for the geothermal areas and lunch. The traditional Furnas stew is a well known option, but check restaurant availability and book if you want it at a particular time. Do not build your entire afternoon around an unconfirmed table. Then choose a main experience: a visit to Terra Nostra Park, with its thermal pool if available under the current rules, or time at Poça da Dona Beija. Both, plus a long lake walk and every viewpoint, may leave you rushing through the best part of the day.

With young children or someone who would rather walk less, make shorter lake stops and spend longer in the garden. Bring suitable clothing, a towel and a change if you plan to bathe, and read the rules of your chosen venue. Rain need not cancel Furnas, but it should influence your decision between a long outdoor walk, garden time and bathing.

Day 6 — Nordeste: watermills, villages and eastern viewpoints

Route: Ponta Delgada → Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park → Nordeste village → Ponta do Sossego and/or Ponta da Madrugada → return. Continue to Povoação village only if you want a longer circuit.

Leave fairly early. Nordeste deserves daylight and time, rather than a dash across the island at the end of the afternoon. Ribeira dos Caldeirões has watermills, water and short paths; it is a good first break. Continue to Nordeste village and stop for lunch before picking your viewpoints. Ponta do Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada combine gardens with coastal views. Check visibility before making each detour.

Povoação village is in the southeast. It is not Sete Cidades village in the western crater. You can extend the eastern circuit to Povoação, but that means more driving and fewer other stops. If anyone is tired, turn back after Nordeste. Do not add Furnas and a long hike to this day as well.

Drive according to real conditions: bends, rain, fog and fading light matter more than an app’s estimate. Use proper stopping places rather than pulling over on a narrow shoulder for a photograph. A shorter version with Ribeira dos Caldeirões, Nordeste village and one viewpoint is still a complete day.

Day 7 — Vila Franca do Campo or a second chance at a crater lake

Main route: Ponta Delgada → Vila Franca do Campo → south coast return. Alternative: go back to Sete Cidades or Lagoa do Fogo if you finally have a clear day.

If you have seen both lakes, spend time in Vila Franca do Campo. Walk around town, view the islet from the coast and consider Nossa Senhora da Paz viewpoint. Access to the Vila Franca do Campo islet depends on the season, transport operation, tickets and conditions; verify these before treating the boat trip as part of your day. With time to spare, add one south coast stop or return to Ponta Delgada.

If one major view was hidden earlier in the week, make one well chosen second attempt. Check the webcam and leave enough time to enjoy the place. If you fly out that day, confirm the car return location and time, allow for fuel and keep your final drive manageable. Your last excursion must fit around departure, not compete with it.

Adjust the route to your trip

Only five usable days

Keep Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and Furnas on separate days. Combine Ponta Delgada with arrival, then choose either the north coast or Nordeste. Accept that the other area can wait for a future trip. A shorter trip becomes more rewarding when you give its main places enough time.

More walking

Replace viewpoint stops with one official trail per day. PR03 SMI in Sete Cidades is linear and needs a return plan; the Furnas Lake trail takes a substantial part of a day. Check distance, difficulty, weather and current status through Azores Trails. A walk cannot be counted as a quick photo stop between drives.

Travelling with children or reduced mobility

Choose fewer stops and check access details with each site. Parking close to a viewpoint does not guarantee level ground or step free access. A longer visit to a garden or Sete Cidades village may be more enjoyable than getting in and out of the car repeatedly.

Unsettled weather

Keep three movable groups: high ground (Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo), valley (Furnas) and town/coast (Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, Vila Franca do Campo). Swap one group at a time and keep day seven open. Conditions can vary considerably between parts of the island.

Where to stay and which car makes sense

Ponta Delgada is a convenient first visit base, with services and straightforward trips to different areas. Staying in Furnas or another town can also work; rearrange the days to reduce backtracking. If you change accommodation midweek, allow for check out, luggage and check in.

Choose a car by actual luggage, passenger numbers and driving preference. An economy or compact may suit two travellers with light bags. A family group should compare luggage capacity and seats. A large vehicle is not a requirement for the viewpoints on roads open to traffic; an automatic may simply be more comfortable for you on unfamiliar hills. See Ilha Verde’s São Miguel car rental page and confirm category, station and conditions for your dates.

Carry water, shoes that cope with wet ground and a rain layer. Respect protected areas, park only where permitted and check warnings at the coast. Leave some unscheduled time in the week: those breaks are often what make the itinerary feel like a holiday rather than a list.

about car rental in the Azores.

We answer the most common questions so you can book with greater clarity and less uncertainty.

View FAQs
Is seven days enough for São Miguel?
Yes, for a balanced first visit to its main areas, with time to adapt one or two days to the weather. It is not enough to do every trail and activity. The itinerary gives you choices rather than pretending everything fits.
Are Sete Cidades village and Povoação village the same place?
No. Sete Cidades village is inside the western Sete Cidades crater. Povoação village is in the southeast and can be part of the eastern circuit. They belong to different days in this guide.
Do I need a car all week?
A car makes this area based itinerary easier and lets you change your plans when cloud hides a lake. Staying mostly in Ponta Delgada and taking organised tours is another valid style of trip. If you rent, check the collection and return stations carefully.
Can I do Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo on one day?
You can drive between them, but keeping them separate gives each more time and protects you from losing both views to cloud on a single day.
Which day is best for Furnas?
Give it a full day when you can fit the lake, village and your chosen main experience around confirmed opening times or bookings. Furnas can be a useful alternative when high viewpoints are in cloud, although rain still affects longer walks.
What if I have six nights rather than seven full days?
Count usable days, not nights. If flights take the first and last day, drop one coastal circuit or the Povoação extension. Keep a spare weather window if you can.
